Johannes Klumpp

Chief Conductor of the Heidelberger Sinfoniker and Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen, Germany

Orchestra leader, music mediator, festival director – since his success in competitions as a young talent at the conductor’s podium, Johannes Klumpp has made a name for himself in many different ways. He took up his position as Chief Conductor of the Heidelberger Sinfoniker in the 2020/2021 season. Together with this freelance ensemble, he is now on the verge of realizing a long-term project: the complete recording of all of Haydn’s symphonies.

Johannes Klumpp has been working as chief conductor and artistic director of the Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen since the 2013/2014 season. His work here focusses on the symphonic works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Not only thanks to the celebrated recordings of his symphonies and concertos to date, Johannes Klumpp has been able to greatly raise the perception and profile of the ensemble. A complete recording of all of Mozart’s symphonies is planned for the coming years.
He also creates innovative formats as part of the ExtraKlang series – held at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site – and has collaborated with well-known personalities such as the actors Martina Gedeck and Sebastian Koch, the composer, pianist and Oscar winner “Hauschka” and the former publicist Roger Willemsen.
His busy concert schedule also takes him to renowned orchestras, including the MDR-Sinfonieorchester, the Stuttgart State Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden Festival Orchestra, the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the NDR Radiophilharmonie and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he enjoys an extensive collaboration with the Hessian State Theatre of Wiesbaden.
To promote an open exchange with the audience, Johannes Klumpp regularly uses the format of a moderated concert. His music has a clear purpose: He wants to “bring music to the people”.
